This post is just for fun. I was binge watching the Below series on Netflix, while knitting the Maine Cables Hat and ….whoa, is that a sweater pattern I recognize?
Suddenly, in season 1, episode 5 of the Netflix movie “Below” a man comes walking into an old abandoned house. As he comes into focus I immediately recognized the sweater he was wearing as the Halibut pattern by Caitlin Hunter of Boyland Knitworks. At least I was pretty sure it was.
I paused the movie to Google the sweater to make sure and yes, the design matched. I’ve never knit the pattern, but it is very recognizable because of the big halibut fish images across the yoke.
The episode continues with him walking around in a scene where the fish-filled sweater is easy to view. Probably anyone who has been knitting a while will recognize this popular pattern.
I’ve never knit it, and have no plans to. In all honesty, the design does not interest me. It’s unique, but I couldn’t picture myself wearing big fish across my body. But, to each his / her own.
The Below series stars Josh Hartnett. The actor Charlie Heaton is one of his sons. You will recognize Mr. Heaton if you are a fan of Stranger Things. There are beautiful scenes of Newfoundland and the area, which I completely enjoyed. Now back to finish my viewing.
I’m curious if you watched the series and also recognized Halibut?

I honestly marathoned the whole series yesterday and instantly recognized the sweater as well! I really enjoyed the show and was actually really happy that it allowed Charlie Heaton to express his phenomenal range in acting – something I always felt Stranger Things never utilized with his character and his talents. As a native Mainer, I was really happy to see how much felt like it was well researched and detailed with how the show was created and filmed – the attention to the accents, the harbor mechanics, the architecture, and, especially, the costumes, which felt so familiar it really made the whole show feel so immersive. I found myself really appreciating all of the sweaters they put Josh Hartnett in, especially that cable knit he wears often when on his rig.
I hope you enjoyed the show and, likewise, back to knitting!

Hello, and yes, I did enjoy the show. The scenery was fabulous, as well as the attention to details as you mentioned. I also loved that cable sweater – what a stunner. “Jonathan” really got to let loose on this show and he stole the scenes! He was always so serious in ST. Thanks so much for this comment, and happy knitting!

I haven’t seen the series but I have seen mention of this. Halibut is my favorite all-time sweater! I made it 5 years ago with some acrylic yarn a friend had given me and I throw it in the washing machine and dryer and it’s still going. I think it’s so cool that the wardrobe department for this production had a knitter on board!

Hi Glenda, I remember seeing that sweater you knit. I was actually thinking of you when I wrote the post because I “knew” someone who had knit it 😉 It is definitely a recognizable design – I hit the pause button as soon as I saw it in the show. I think it’s cool too. I wonder what Caitlin Hunter thinks!
