A Visit From Three Deer, Backyard Photos

Doe a Deer

We had three deer that visited the backyard a few weeks ago. Back before our week long summer weather preview, with temps in the 80’s, we had some snow on the ground and one morning I noticed my cat sitting on the deck and peering intently  into the woods. I knew that she saw something interesting and then a little head popped up over the edge of the drop-off and it was a deer! Our backyard is pretty small, with a drop into the woods beyond. The house was built on the side of a hill and fill dirt makes up the yard. The deer was on the banking and peeking up to look at the house.
I ran to get the camera and then headed upstairs where I’d have the best view of the backyard.

All the pictures were taken out my upstairs bathroom window, so they are not as clear as I’d like.

I know that seeing deer is not all that unusual, but I always love to see them. They had their thick winter coats and kept looking toward the house as if they wanted to come up and sniff out the birdfeeders. One came very close while the other two stayed down in the woods.

Sharing My Photos of Winter White

Snow Cat

Short and sweet post today to show off my favorite snow, white, and winter pictures.

I took these myself over the past years and they were all taken at different addresses, back when I lived like a nomad. I’m so glad those days are over, but it gave me the opportunity to check out parts of the state I would not have ever known so well. Some I am glad to be away from, and others I miss.

And I miss my cat, Richie. That picture was taken at my last rental on the back porch. I couldn’t believe the cat stayed outside while the snow covered him, but he was a hunter and couldn’t tear himself away. It made a cool photo.

Waking Up to Two Feet of Snow – In October!

Nightmare New England is a spooky Halloween theme park, but in New Hampshire we are waking up to our own nightmare of two feet of snow – in October! The forecast was for 6-10 inches with 12 in the higher elevations, so I expected around a foot. At midnight I woke up and got a photo of my porch which already had 18 inches and it was snowing pretty hard still. It’s the perfect, real-life Halloween nightmare!

I count myself very lucky to still have power. It was flickering around midnight, but has not gone out. The wind here didn’t seem too bad and maybe that is why. All the wiring is also underground in my neighborhood.

Measuring just shy of 2 feet at 5AM Sunday

I can’t see much out front yet as my outside lights have been removed during the siding renovation. The guys were going to finish up next week and now I wonder how far this will set them back. It will be a Halloween to remember.
I grew up in Massachusetts and do not remember going Trick or Treating EVER in snow. And this is more snow at one time than I have ever seen. I feel sorry for the little kids who want to go out and get candy.

It could have been worse. Down further south of us they got a lot of ice and there are many power outages and lots of damage.

Lots of shoveling to do.

As the sun comes up it will be a winter wonderland, with lots of shoveling to be done. I wonder what will happen with Halloween? It makes me feel bad for the kids, as walking around on roads full of snow will be dangerous.

This is A Lot Of Snow!

lots of snow
This was before the last foot of snow fell.

I took this picture looking out my front window toward the steps leading to the front door. That was a few days ago and we have since had another 8 or 9 inches fall and then a couple inches of slushy stuff today. Not to mention that the roof dumped it’s load just this afternoon. In fact I am heading outside with my son to shovel, even though I am not quite over the flu. This is the most snow I’ve seen here in a while.

The problem is that there is no easy way to shovel it when the mounds are as high as me. In fact I usually throw it and then watch it tumble back down into the path behind me. At this point I am just trying to keep the doorways clear and a path shoveled for the oil guy to make his delivery hook up at the side of the deck. I always find it difficult to show snowfall well in photos. It helps to have a person standing beside the piles I suppose, but there was no one to do so.

The new plow guy did do my mailbox this time, which was a very unexpected surprise. Digging out the mailbox is one of the most difficult jobs. In fact my son is annoying me so he will be shoveling alone while I make supper. That is an even better idea.
