One Beautiful Day

This past week has been very rainy. With the remnants of tropical storm Nicole dumping over 5 inches of rain here yesterday and a few inches the day before, the gorgeous day we had Wednesday was just a good memory.

It was so beautiful that I took the cats for a walk. My landlady recently had someone come out and cut some trees for her to use as firewood so they made a path through the back of the yard in the woods. It’s a nice place to go for a quick walk and my two cats love to follow along.

They run and climb the trees chasing each other and then just flop down on the rocks watching me. I am not as graceful and they probably wonder why I am so slow, but I stopped to get some photos of some mushrooms I found. I had wanted some foliage photos, but it’s just not a great year for that. Or maybe it’s too early, but I don’t think so.

When we get to the end of the man-made trail, I cut into the trees where it’s easier to walk, except for all the branches that have fallen, and that’s where Fontana decided to rest on a mossy rock.

Beautiful Fontana

She looked so regal with her long dark fur on the bright green moss. I am a terrible animal photographer and I thought for sure she’d hop down before I got a decent shot of her, but I am very happy with this one. I even caught Richie in the background resting on his own rock.
It’s hard to believe that we adopted them 9 months ago. Instead of spending their days in little cages, they now have the whole big woods to roam. I think they are happy. And it was a beautiful day.

Blue Snow

When one and a half feet of snow fell last week, I kept seeing this blue tint in the mounds.

I enhanced this photo a bit in picasa to bring out the blue better so it actually wasn’t quite this bright.

I am not a scientific type person, so I’ve added a link underneath the photo to explain why snow (and ice) sometimes looks blue. I just thought it was unusual and pretty.

Little Pond in Winter Snow

Black and white photo? Or just winter.
I love to take snow photos but making them interesting is a little difficult. After a while they all begin to look the same.
I lived in Hopkinton, NH during one of the dreariest years of my life (“so far” as Homer would say), and this little pond was on the land at the house I rented.
We saw deer, beavers, turkeys and bears while we lived there. The kitchen had big windows that looked out on this pond and my son had fun playing in the water and catching frogs and other little creatures in the nice weather.
We had record snow fall that year and this is one of the pictures I still have.

Taking a Winter Walk

It feels like I’ve been getting nowhere fast lately.

Just a few months ago I was rising at 3am and working for 3 peaceful, quiet hours before my son got up to go to school. I was getting so much accomplished! Now thanks to hot flashes and new cats that like to play through the night, I get up groggily at 6am.

My son comes home at 3pm and my “work” day pretty much ends only to begin the evening chores of homework (his) and cooking.

Then came the holidays, which stole my valuable work time and the 2 week Christmas vacation. When my son went back to school he made it through 2 1/2 days and came home sick with the flu. It wasn’t bad, just enough for him to be home again for 5 days. Of course that created lots of make up homework which is his FAVORITE thing!!! He’s the kind of kid who will twirl his pencil and sputter about his horrible teacher instead of doing the work and getting it over with. A homework paper that should take 10 minutes takes him 30.

We’ve had some snow storms lately and that gave him another day off to spend at home and by then I had pretty much fallen so far behind in my work that it didn’t really matter.

So today I opted for a walk. It’s been far too long since we had nice enough weather, and although the road is a bit treacherous if a car comes along, I figured there wouldn’t be much traffic at 7:30am.
I knew that the snow on the trees wouldn’t last so I took all I could before the battery died. I wanted to add more photos, but the site is freezing up when I try, but I got one posted. I’ll be adding more as I can.
