Foliage Update From New Hampshire

I was just updating my Squidoo lens on New England Foliage and realized that the season is almost over…Already!  Wow, it seemed to fly by this year.

For 2 years now we have had gorgeous color and if not for the horrific ice storm that hit us last December, I bet the color would have been even better. Many of the trees have been broken or uprooted and my photos were taken of different views this year.

I took the dog up the road for a walk two nights ago and the sun was just going down over the hill. It was hitting the yellow leaves just right and looked like a spotlight – of course I didn’t have my camera!! And I knew it wouldn’t last long enough for me to run (I don’t run fast) home and grab it…so I just stood and enjoyed it.

My plan was to go back up the next night and capture a replay of that moment, but it rained and the wind blew…and today when I walked up the hill I realized that I wouldn’t get that moment back. Almost all the yellow leaves have been blown away. My next chance for that photo won’t be for another year.

Time passes quickly – and in my opinion, never so quickly as in the Fall.

I got my photos. Maybe not as many as I would have liked, and I may still get some good ones, but in my area the leaves are fading away by mid-month usually and today is the 9th.

If you are planning to visit the northeast to see the color, you’d better hurry.

New England Foliage ~ October 2009

I had a great day for taking photos on Monday and made my shots into postcards shown here.
The Heron and Birch tree pictures are from last Fall, but the others were taken this week.

I wouldn’t say that the color is at it’s peak yet in southwestern NH, but it is very close.

Unfortunately today will be rainy and a strong wind is moving in this afternoon, and as so often happens in Fall, just when the colors are becoming their brightest, the leaves are blown from the trees.

New England Foliage Photos – 2009 Season Begins in NH

I just took these photos a few days ago – the end of September, 2009. The best color is along the swampy areas with just a few other trees beginning to change.

Moose Tracks in the Mud

While walking around the lake in search of good foliage shots, I decided to go out the trail in search of red capped mushrooms. I had seen them some place while walking (without my camera) and thought for sure it was out this way.

The trail is cleared for snowmobiles in the winter and that is how I found it last year. The snow was all packed down by the snowmobiles so it was easy to follow. But it’s a nice walk in other seasons too except that it can be swampy in places.

When I came back to the road, I was still looking – unsuccessfully – for the red mushrooms and happened to see a large imprint in the mud. People throw their trash all over (don’t understand that) and there was an old oil – or something- container next to the track. It might help to show how big it was.

As I looked further, I could see at least 2 more prints and they were widely spaced.

I don’t know what else could have made this huge track so I am assuming it was a moose. And as I was leaving the area I could hear something make a splash over in the water – out of my view. I ran to the bridge in hopes of seeing my first moose…but no such luck. Tracks are all I get – today.

Again I thought, as I so often do while walking…WHY ARE PEOPLE SUCH PIGS? – throw your trash away at home!
