Summer at The Lakes In New Hampshire

With only a few short months to swim, boat, vacation and enjoy the warmth up here in New Hampshire, the lakeside communities get filled up and busy quickly.
The photo below was taken a few years ago near the docks in Meredith on Lake Winnipesaukee.  (Aerial view to the right.)
My “New England” blog is suppose to have photos of this area of the country, but I have been remiss in providing them. I’ve become caught up in moving and home improvements and haven’t ventured out anywhere.
So the photo is old, but I’ll bet that the Lakes Region will be jumping soon if it’s not already.
When my son comes to visit this summer, I want to take him out on the MS Mount Washington – the boat that cruises the big Lake Winni.
I hope to begin living like normal people this year and actually take a break and much needed vacation time for myself. Then I will have some New England photos to share here.

Kodak Pocket Instamatic 100, First camera for ...
Kodak Pocket Instamatic 100, First camera for the ‘Pocket Instamatic’-Film. Presented in this box on the ‘Photokina’ fair in Germany, 1972 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I’ve been taking photos my whole life – like many of you.  My first camera was a little Instamatic that came in a yellow box with a flash cube (very similar to the one pictured).  Click and wind, then send the finished film off to be developed.

I took pictures of my cat and dog mostly, but also my backyard and some special outdoor places.  The pictures were pretty crummy looking compared to what we have to work with these days, but I am still a point and shoot kind of gal.

My kids gave me a nice Sony a year or two ago and I’m having fun getting shots of my new house.  Now that I am planting gardens I will be growing flowers and veggies to use as my subjects.

Recently I got a shot of my strawberry plant and added it to Pixabay where it was chosen as a front page image!    Whoo hoo… I am excited!

I haven’t added many photos to their site yet, but I go there to find pictures to use for my work. They offer free, public domain images (that means you can use them for anything – no strings attached).  I love that the folks there have high standards for approving uploaded photos so you will find only good quality images at the site.

If you have tons of  pictures and want to show them off, consider joining Pixabay and share them with the world!  And go see my strawberry.  Thank you Simon and the Pixabay gang.

College Graduation Ceremony in Manchester, NH

Hesser College graduation
Graduation Ceremony at the Verizon Center, Manchester, NH

Last weekend we attended my daughter’s college graduation ceremony. She and almost 700 other people received their diplomas from Hesser College. The ceremony took place in Manchester, New Hampshire on a gorgeous, sunny day.

Parking is very limited so we parked a few streets away from the building at a metered space which was an excellent idea. Then we made a quick get-away after the three hour long ceremony.

My daughter’s name was near the beginning and then we simply sat and waited through the next 600+ names afterward!

Graduation ceremonies have not changed much.   Eye strain from searching for your kid when they all look so much alike.  And lots of sitting and waiting.

With a B.A. degree in criminal justice, now she will have new and better job opportunities along with all those college bills to pay!

My Trip to Holderness and The Manor on Golden Pond

Holderness is a small town in the northern part of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The Lakes Region is such a beautiful area, I always love driving through and this past April was the first time I’ve had the chance to stay there.

In fact it’s the first time I’ve been away at all in many years. I went to stay for one night, at the Manor on Golden Pond, with my daughter and her fiance. This is where she is planning to hold her wedding next year and we wanted to check it out.

The Manon on Golden Pond

The Manor is located very near Squam Lake which is where the movie “On Golden Pond” with Henry and Jane Fonda and Kathryn Hepburn was filmed.   They have a poster (like the one below) on the wall.

This Manor was built by an Englishman who came to the region and loved it so much that the bought the land and proceeded to build his estate there. Over the years the place was sold and fixed up and converted to an upscale Inn with quaint rooms and delicious food.  You can read all about the history – and see photos – in the album that is in the little “library” room where afternoon tea is served.

We were welcomed by Kathryn who had an English accent, as most of the staff do.  They are recruited from England to come work at the Manor.

The lobby was quiet and deserted for most of our stay and it has a big fireplace with a salt and pepper chess set in front of it. My daughter and I worked on a puzzle at one point – for a few minutes – and there were other little games scattered around. We went for our visit the end of April which is still the off-season for area establishments. In fact besides us, there were only two other couples staying at the Manor.

View from the “Windsor” room

We happened to visit on the most beautiful weekend! It was sunny and the views were lovely, although the wind was whipping and it was not warm. This is the view from the room I stayed in. I got a surprise upgrade to the “Windsor” which is located on the second floor in the corner that faces the lake.
I loved it! I could even enjoy the view from my bathroom… (see below).

Even in the bathroom, the views were pretty nice.
