Red and Yellow Columbine in My Garden

I planted this Columbine in my flower garden last year and this Spring it has really grown. It’s loaded with flowers that are just beginning to go by.

Columbine is one of the flowering plants I’ve come to enjoy most in my New England landscape. The colors are gorgeous and they provide seeds when the flowers die which I can plant for the following year.

I also have purple and pink plants, but none of them bloomed as profusely as this one.

Although Florida, where I now live, has it’s own beautiful nature, flowers like the columbine will not grow there. I also miss my peonies and hydrangeas.

Propogating Hydrangeas

Late last summer I dug up the rooted stem of the little hydrangea (below) and planted it by the front steps. I had been waiting all summer for it to develop a good root system.

The main shrub – (photo at bottom)- had some low branches that were touching the ground and one of the branches had rooted itself in the middle of the stem.

Come to find out, this is a great way to propagate – or start new- plants.

I noticed this year that there is already another new little shrub growing that will need to be dug up and planted some place else.

Waiting for the Flowers

Next door the crocus are blooming although the yard is mostly still full of snow. These are the first little signs of warmth that give us assurance that winter won’t last forever.

I am looking forward to the hydrangea shrubs blooming, since my business depends upon my floral photography, but that will be a while.
Summers are short here in the northeast so we make the best of them.
